Asha Puthli: The Devil Is Loose

Asha Puthli hit her peak back in the 70's with disco flavored soul hits like the aforementioned "The Devil Is Loose." Having a career spanning several decades of east-west fusions she was the first asian artist to be signed to CBS records and released several albums that made her a cornerstone artist in Europe. She recently found a comeback being sampled by hip hop artists like Jay Z and The Neptunes.

Bubbling Up: Discovery

Discovery is a two piece group consisting of Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend (More about them later..trust) and Wes Miles. The two formed Discovery, an electro RnB outfit that released their first single through UK label XL Recordings. One song that pops off the album is "So Insane" and it follows its namesake with a sick tempo change that is super sexy. Check out this video an artist made for the song.

The Noisettes

I cannot believe that I haven't posted about The Noisettes! They are a slick trio from the UK that combine 60's girl group sounds with the awesome backing of a rock band. Try them out, you might like them. They released their latest album Wild Young Hearts in 2009 which promptly went gold. Below is the video for their third single from the album "Never Forget You."

K'Jon Brings 90s RnB Back With "On The Ocean"

K'Jon is a recent addition to Universal Republic's repertoire and brings the smooth stylings of 90's greats like Toni Braxton and Keith Sweat. If you're like me, you have a soft spot for slow RNB jams and "On The Ocean" has a message.

The track has reached the top spot on Urban AC Radio. His new album, I GET AROUND, is set to drop on August 4th this year. Enjoy some smooth rnb to get you through the week.

Britney's Version of Telephone Leaked

So apparently the blogosphere is a buzz with the leaked demo Britney Spears did of Lady Gaga's mess known as "Telephone." Check out the auto-tuned to death track below. Honestly, I wonder how it would have sounded once it went through the producers hands and onto the radio waves. It can't be worse than the one that's played constantly right now AND the video would have been hot. Britney may not be a great singer, but she knows how to turn out a damn good music video.

Janelle Monáe - Tightrope

Janelle Monáe is the biggest and brightest breath of fresh air to come into the stagnant music scene in the past few years. Her first album in 2007, Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase was a mixture of James Brown soul and futuristic sounds tied together with her sweet and endearing vocal ability. She is gearing up to release her newest album The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV) in May and it should be a great record. Check out the trailer and her breakthrough video for "Many Moons" below.

Bubbling Up: Tortured Soul

This Brooklyn trio combines House music with Jazz sensibilities to bring a new and pretty awesome sound to their new album "Did You Miss Me." They sound like a cross between Amy Winehouse (a little), Jamiroquai (a lot), and Armand Van Helden (for lack of a better reference). These guys seem ready for mainstream success so catch them before they blow up!

Pink Wows Grammy's with Glitter In The Air

Pink has had a successful run with her latest album Funhouse that's spawned a bunch of great singles like "So What" and "Sober" but she really brought herself worldwide attention with her unique (and SIMPLE) performance of "Glitter In The Air." She got herself a standing ovation, which alone is impressive against Beyonce's yelling and Lady Gaga's over the top gimmicks. Congrats Pink, you deserve it.

Bubbling Up: Selah Sue

Selah Sue is a young singer and songwriter from Belgium (land of Brussel Sprouts and Jean-Claude Van Damme) who's been making waves with her spot on youtube covers of great songs. Below, watch her cover Amy Winehouse's cover of the Zuton's song "Valerie" (one of my favorites). Her EP titled Black Part Love was released in 2008. She sounds like Duffy a little.

Jeffree Star - Get Away With Murder

I find Jeffree Star kinda intriguing. He's making fun of all the crap that's going on in pop culture today and the dude can sing. The video for "Get Away With Murder" is over the top dance fluff but it puts all those pop tartlets to shame! The song is the first single lifted from his latest album Beauty Killer. If you're bored of the state of music (and entertainment as a whole) these days take a listen, its pretty fresh and a sick dance tune.

Susan Boyle Sets Chart Reign Record

So a year ago, Susan Boyle was living alone in relative obscurity until she tried out for Britain's Got Talent and ended up becoming an international youtube sensation. Her debut album I Dreamed a Dream has already hit number one in the UK and is set to bring in the new year with it's SIXTH week perched atop the US Billboard Charts. This is an example of when reality TV gets it right. She deserves all the success she gets, and I look forward to hearing more about her. Check out her first single "White Horses" and go out and support her if you like it.
